Aim: To consider what makes good market research and start a draft of a questionnaire to help me plan my magazine.

How do you make an effective and helpful questionnaire?

  • questions that are relevant to the genre of the magazine. E.g. what font should the "indie" magazine use for its front cover
  • tell the person how to answer the question. E.g. (Tick the box)
  • make sure the questionnaire is in a neat formal structure
  • make sure the questionnaire is in a logical order
  • give examples of what you are talking about so people know. E.g. Simple font
  • Make sure you use the word "prefer" and other specific language

Likert scale: a likert scale is a question that measures a respondent's attitude towards a particular subject.
Sematic-Differential scale: a Sematic-Differential scale is a question that uses numbers to measure their opinion.

Topics I will need to ask about in my questionnaire:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • hobbies
  • accessibility E.g. Smart Phone apps, websites, magazines
  • what genres/bands/artists/sub genres do they like
  • how/where do they listen to there music
  • what do they use to retrieve their music
  • do they like to find new artists
  • how do they find new artists
  • do they read music magazines
  • how often do they read them a month if they do read music magazines
  • do you buy/subscribe to music magazines
  • what music magazines have you heard of
  • what magazine do they read (if they do read magazines)
  • do they read blogs
  • how often a week do they read a blog if they do read them
  • do you go to any gigs
  • what venues have you been to
  • what is your favourite venue
  • do you see live music locally (Brighton)
  • do you go to any local (Brighton) festivals. E.g. Shake Down
  • how often
  • do they use social media to follow artists to know if they release new music
  • do they buy music merchandise
  • the best look for the magazine and the chosen genre
  • colour schemes of 3
  • style of photography
  • representation of males and females
  • preference of style, language and of tone used in the magazine

What makes a good questionnaire evaluation?

  • Pie Charts
  • Comments/Tips about each question in the questionnaire.
  • Comment on what questions where good and worked well and what questions where bad and didn't work.
  • Comment on how the questionnaire could be improved in the areas that where not good enough.
  • Was the questionnaire given to the right audience.
  • what questions should you have asked in the questionnaire that you did not put in.

Benefits of advertising through print media

Benefits of advertising through print media

Specific Target Audience:

In print media, the advantage of catering to specific target audience opens up countless opportunities to enhance sales figures. A fashion magazine would highlight cosmetic products and fashion accessories. At the same time, a sports magazine would display sports related ads to cater to its readers. There is no wastage of resources as ads get to reach the target audience.

Special Ad Positioning:

A major advantage in magazine advertising is that an advertiser can request special ad positioning. This means you can ask that your ad is placed in a specific page or within a column article (an article or column they believe will receive heavy traffic so the readers of that column/article will view there advertisement as well at receive more revenue). This will bring greater visibility to the brand. This is also commercially more effective as potential buyers would notice it. It is a different matter if you don’t want to specify where your ad should appear.

High Reach Prospective:

Another advantage is that magazines have a high reach prospective. This is because magazines get passed from family to friends to customers to colleagues and so on.

Readers:

There are about 160,000 magazines published in the world(most with thousands of readers as well) . The large number of these magazines is somewhat misleading as it does not bring that many revenues. However, there is still a great deal of respect and demand for this traditional form of media advertising

Aim: Job roles in magazines

The publishing industry employs over 195,000 people . representing approximately 36% of the creative media workforce.
51,000 people employed in the news paper sector
50,500 work in journals and magazines
33,000 in the book industry
12,000 in the other information service
See at Www.Creativeskillset.org

For example Ipc media is a very big publishing company , one of their biggest magazines is ... NME
I compared two NME magazines for there roles and jobs in their magazines . surprisingly although both magazines where NME they had different roles and people performing the roles which where the same. for example in both issues of the magazine the editor role was preformed by different people in one the editor was Mike Williams , yet in the other was Connor McNiholas

What do you think are the responsibilities of chief editor:

To make sure that all the articles and columns are relevant
To make sure that everything is suitable for the target audience

To make sure the information and text is appealing for  the reader

To make sure all information is accurate and reliable
To make sure all the staff are doing the correct thing/role
is the "public face" of the story, representing the magazine in statements in all platforms of publication
Attends functions, events, award ceremonies
Occasional column writing/editorial piece

budget control decides on "narrative" or theme for each edition of the magazine for all staff to adhere to
publish an "editorial calendar" to highlight themes in appropriate months
